Yes, that’s what I thought. Just extrapolating from the house, neighborhood, the Ladies who Lunched with June……one expects that Ward was professional class (he wore a suit every day), but nothing special. Mid level manager at a bank sounded good to me. Maybe he was a CPA or something.

Point is that then, somebody earning in even the 50th percentile could have a stay home wife and life comfortably. I saw some stats once (would love to check up on this) that indicated that in the late 50’s and 60’s, the median priced home sold for about 1–2X the median annual salary. Today, it’s substantially more, around 5X here in Houston.

Cars have followed the same pattern. When I first started to pay attention to car prices, the price of a VW Bug or Honda Civic (the two cheapest cars in the US at the time) was $1,999; the median income was 22K at that time, so the car cost was 9% of median salary.

Today, the cheapest car in America is 13K, and the median income is 58K. So, the car now costs 22% of the median salary.

And they wonder why the middle class is pissed……..
