Shouldn’t we hold people to account against the standards they claim to uphold? What happened to “love thy neighbour as thyself” and “forgive me my trespasses as I forgive those who trespass against me”?

Yes. But let’s understand that Scriptures are complicated things that require interpretation, and that interpretation matures with societies. In general, I try not to tell Christians what they believe, although I am quite aware that there are no shortage of Christians and Atheists who are all too ready to tell me what they think MY religion says I should believe.

Pretty simple to pull out a verse, IOW, and forget about the fact that there are thousands of years of conflicting opinions about what that verse specifically means.
