So, how is it that these groups of voters have become mirror images of the people they voted against? Is there some sort of previously described psychological phenomena happening here? Or is this just completely brand new?
Yep. I noticed this early in 2016 — that the people most opposed to Trump were behaving the most like him, exhibiting the exact characteristics in their opposition that they attributed to him.
I tie this into a thought I’ve expressed elsewhere, that what social media is showing us is that many people who appear to be sane in public………are really not so sane, when you pull their filters off and find out how they really process information. And now, instead of exhibiting that insanity on social media only, Trump has weakened their filters to the point that they’re now displaying their own irrationality in the media and in public.
I recently heard Scott Adams talk to Sam Harris on Trump, and it was amazing to see how an otherwise rational Sam Harris (who famously schooled a reflexively emotional Ben Affleck on Bill Maher’s show), lose it like Lego Batman at bedtime. It was absolutely fascinating to see Sam Harris mirror the traits of the object of his displeasure — reaching the hyperbolic Hitler analogy about 45 minutes into the 2+ hour conversation.
Yes, I remember when Sam eviscerated Affleck. Same thought as above — there is something about Trump which causes people to drop their filters and say what they really think — — and what they think isn’t all that rational, many times.
Anyway, that’s the filter I thought of when you mentioned that leftists came up with the “tribal” epithet — it seems more of a reflection of their own insecurities.
In this case, it’s yet another example of how people, when confronted by something that they don’t understand or that they are afraid of, desperately try to put a label on it and file it away in that drawer in their mental file cabinet. This allows them to ignore it, rather than actually analyze it rationally.
Trump presented a number of ideas and behaviors that the left liked to think were “solved” in America, and/or things that they had classified as “small minorities of Fox News watchers who will die off soon”.
Trump winning the election showed them that the America they thought they had ushered in successfully …. hadn’t been ushered in at all. A rude awakening, to say the least.
