I got the bill and it was $1,400 but I noticed the amount they were going to get from my insurance was $750 and I was responsible for the rest. I went to the hospital billing office and offered $750 in cash for the whole thing and it was accepted. No insurance claim, no paperwork.
Yea. We suffer from being a culture where haggling is frowned upon, with the exception of car-buying. We don’t like to do it.
My MIL is from Syria. Entirely different attitude. She’ll haggle at Wal Mart. Doesn’t get her anywhere, but she used to try. :-) OTOH, tradesmen who want to fix her plumbing or paint her living room get squeezed like there’s no tomorrow.
Anyway, it is well known that hospitals will settle at well below their initial quote, especially if they can avoid having to mess with insurance. (They might have settled at $500 cash, btw.)
