OBL was a young nonplayer in Afghanistan in the 80’s. He was in theatre to be sure, but he was using his dad’s money to run hospitals in the northwest part of the country. He had no military operation, no militia, and no weaponry. We were arming the existing warlords, not OBL; had we tried to arm OBL, (who was described as a “tourist” by the warlords) they would have put a bullet into his head.
This book is a must read. It explains who all the major players in 1980’s Afghanistan were, and who did what to who. And makes clear that Bin Laden was a bit player who never got anything from the US.
