Well, your last paragraph speculation is the most likely, in my view.

The GOP has a slew of potentially-attractive presidential candidates in the Senate (Cruz being one) in the 55-35 age bracket for which 2024 is a prime opportunity, seeing that Biden could age out and his VP was summarily rejected by her own party just this cycle. (Harris's scalp is, by all accounts, still nailed to Tulsi's surfboard.)

They may be giving Trump lip-deference today, but don't expect that to last too far into the future.
