There have been times wherein I felt that we U.S. citizens have had to choose between two awful choices (Obama wasn’t one of them)for President, and I wondered what might happen after certain elections. After this election, we all found out just how bad things can/could be. I truly don’t know why our Nation cannot come up with better choices for the Office of the President. Somehow, I don’t think the issue is taken seriously enough.
Well, putting aside the fact that I think Obama WAS one of them, based on his utter lack of a serious professional resume leading to an unaccomplished presidency, I think the answer to your very pertinent question is that good people look at the utter agony that the media inflicts on both the candidate and his family and says “to hell with that bullshit.”
Let me illustrate. I am 62. In my lifetime, we have had three unabashed pussy-grabbers in the Oval Office. The others are Mr. Clinton (obviously) and Mr. Kennedy. Thing is, we didn’t KNOW about Mr. Kennedy until well after his untimely death. Why? Because although the media at the time knew full well about all his antics, the journalistic custom of the day was to drop the Cone of Silence on personal matters that did not affect the governance of the United States of America. And for good reason: because if the media is constantly uncovering skeletons in closets that upsets the President’s family life, that COULD VERY WELL affect the governing of the United States of America. (And did, in the case of Mr. Clinton.) (Pick it up from :50)
That’s changed. Whoever runs for President in 2020 is going have his (if a man) credit card statements going back to college analyzed to see if there’s any charges there from a (for example) a gentleman’s club. If one is found, they’ll dig up the stripper than danced for him and offer her big bucks to say something derogatory that can be used against the candidate. They’ll parade her from talk show to talk show, smearing his character and putting his family through the wringer for things that were unseemly but legal, and even possibly done before he even met his wife, was married, or had children.
Seriously now. You have to ask why we can’t get good people to run? :-)
