Well put. Most Americans are not aware that they are fighting a "war" for or against racism --- because they're not. By rather large majorities, Americans believe in equality of opportunity. Where they break with anti-racism activists, however, is with the HOW and the WHERE further discussion of antiracism takes place.

Parents, for example, seem rather strident (although I've yet to see good polling on this subject) that the schools, for example, are not the place for any wars to be fought. They want the schools to attend to their knitting and leave the debate on what other accommodations need to be made to the adults.
