I do see a great deal of upset people if we end up eliminating most sports programs though. The NFL for example needs those thousands of college level players to then pick from to build the pro ranks. No college football and the NFL would end up having to shut down most likely.
Well, I think they’d start a “minor league” where high school kids could try out and play, like MLB does.
But the larger implication for the US is that if you did away with college sports, get used to seeing the US down with Switzerland in the Olympic medal count. With some very rare exceptions (women’s gymnastics), the colleges are the feeder programs to international sports. Other countries without college sports programs have federally funded Olympic developmental groups to do the training. (The US Olympic Committee, and the facility they run out in Colorado Springs, are all funded by donations.)
