Unfortunately, I took the course in 1993, and I no longer have the text. (It’s hard to imagine the day when references weren’t at the end of a google search, but there were).

Here’s the general idea, but no stats.

At any rate, people who are highly successful at anything (scholarship, business, athletics, etc) usually get there because they are intrinsically motivated. And although they can all remember the students that were smarter than they were but never achieved anything or the athlete that was more talented than they but never “made it” to the top, there is a marked tendency, in my experience, for those high achieving people to forget WHY those other more talented people did not achieve at the same level as they.

In short, it’s because those others were extrinsically motivated, and once the “good enough” carrot was achieved, and the “whip” avoided…..they quit working so hard.

IF (and yes, this is an IF, I don’t presume to know how this would actually play out) a preponderance of adults remain extrinsically motivated in their adult lives, which I believe is the case, than UBI is simply a funding mechanism for liquor stores and drug dealers.
