First off democracy is a very fragile and sophisticate concept of governance, and that’s the reason why it has required tens of thousands of years for a group of peoples to gain the courage to give it a serious shot.
True…..but with 250 years of history, an independent judiciary, and a Constitution with those years of precedent behind it…….I’d have to disagree if you’re going to contend that at THIS point in our history, OUR democracy could reasonably be described as “fragile”. In fact, a more accurate term might be “massive inertia, to the point where no single person, given an eight year limit in office, could come close to dismantling it.”
Ironically by wishing be become an American version of the ruthless Russian he is doing Putin’s work of trying to undermine the worlds democracies that oppose him, particularly American democracy. Every time Putin hears Trump lambast American’s mainstream press like The New York Times or the Washington Post, he sees it as another nail in the coffin of the strongest democracy the world has ever seen, and smiles approvingly.
Well, I agree that Putin wins if America is in chaos. But as far as chaos is concerned, it takes two to tango.
But, more relevant might be the following question: considering the long history we now have of errors being made in the mainstream media regarding the Russia investigation (curiously, all errors are to the detriment of Trump, never in his favor) and the retractions that then follow, well documented by Glenn Greenwald…….do you really believe that “freedom of the press” exists without any sort of accountability?
There is a reason that the First Amendment is listed first. Without freedom of expression and a truly free press there is no democracy. A free press is the first thing would be dictators’ like Trump attack and hope to replace with their own propaganda machines.
I agree, in principle. But recent events have forced me to consider the possibility that our good-hearted Framers assumed (without evidence) that the press would always act responsibly. This does not appear to be the case of late.
(And, let’s remember that the first attack on a “free press outlet” that was levied in recent memory was not by Mr. Trump, but when Mr. Obama frequently attacked Fox News.)
That’s what about America Trump is out to destroy — the core of our uniting democratic ideals and thus our real, hard won freedom.
Sorry to say, but being 63 years old, I cannot remember a time when the Democrats were not telling the GOP and their voters that they were stupid, evil, or corporate toadies.
Let’s drop the myth that we were ever “united” on any “ideals”, shall we? Want to talk about the way Abraham Lincoln was described by the “free press”? The comparisons to barnyard animals was not uplifting towards any “ideals.”
