This is all well put, and I am heartened (as a very suspicious and tepid supporter of Trump) that the commentary below did not contain even on shrill voice yelling in all caps “RESIST! RESIST EVERYTHING!”

The “resist everything” people know not what they do. What they do is put us all at risk, perhaps at the greatest risk to the Republic since the Civil War.

Why is that? Well, first off, the Republicans view their obstruction to Mr. Obama as issue based, not personal. And although most Democrats would reject that notion, the fact is that for each and every roadblock they threw in front of Obama’s initiatives, the GOP had an issue based reason for doing so. Far too many regulations for their liking in the ACA. Many, if not most, first term Obama initiatives included a demand for “new revenues”. They found the funding mechanism for the infrastructure proposals insufficient. Etc, etc, etc.

So, suppose, if we will, the Democrats move to pure obstruction with Trump. The obstructionism would be viewed by the GOP as an escalation of the “war”, not a tit for tat.

Now, suppose the Democrats beat the odds and win the 2020 election. The most likely scenario is that the Democrat president would face a Republican house and a strengthened Republican Senate.

Now, imagine the confirmation hearings. Or a SCOTUS nominee, facing an agitated GOP Senate bent on revenge.

Who wins in that scenario? Not us. But the most interested observers would be Russia and China, who would test the waters to see if the divided US would be able to agree on ANYTHING AT ALL militarily, assuming there was no direct attack on the US homeland and territories. China would snap up Taiwan; Russia might think the Baltics looked tasty, and would likely move to re-aquire the old Soviet territories.

I say resist Trump if you are inclined to do so, but make sure you have an issue-based reason for doing so. If so, then we all get out of this mess intact. America will be fine.

OTOH, if it becomes “obstruct everything” for personal reasons, I think the Republic will surely be at risk.

(If you need evidence of that, look how fast California started talking secession, after years of chortling at Texas for even considering what they though was such a horrible idea.)
