This brings us to the final way the internet has changed sportswriting. Vowing to unfollow a writer after every Trump tweet has become a persistent response. But no matter how many readers the politically minded sportswriter turns off, it’s easier than ever to find new eyeballs.

For a season, perhaps. But the supply of new eyeballs is not infinite. And at the end of the line…..it’s questionable if you’re still a sportswriter or not.

Sports is about escaping the difficult issues held in current events. And the best feature of sports is that, unlike politics, the writers aren’t necessary at all. Sports tell their own stories, in the games, in the competitions, and in the statistics. The writers are just there for embellishment, and the moment they stop being entertaining,……well, they may as well be selling insurance.
