The thing that should terrify the left the most is that Trump may very well succeed in returning us to 3.5% to 4% GDP growth, which would shrink income inequality and return some of the good paying jobs that are currently in focus, while at the same time precisely nothing happens that would upset any reasonable social justice activist.

James Carville never spoke truer words when he said “it’s the economy, stupid.” If the economy is good in 2020, meaning that the perception of middle America is that they have more disposable income in 2020 than 2016 he’s re-elected. If it’s not, he isn’t. All the other thrashing about is meaningless.

That, for better or worse, is the lesson of history. But I do understand how much fun everyone is having arguing about the minutae (relatively speaking).
