This is about the current threats the free press faces from people with an agenda or money that seek to silence them, and how far they will go to do so.

The press faces no threats whatsover assuming two things:

  • They remember that what is “newsworthy” is not the solely up to them. Community standards matter. They do change over time — — JFK’s indiscretions were not considered newsworthy then, but would (one would assume) be plastered all over Page One today — but in large part, the public has a say in what is considered newsworthy. And many of us believe that Gawker’s outing of Thiel, and the Hogan sex tape, are beyond the pale when making that consideration.
  • They are accurate, truthful, and balanced in their coverage.
