How does cutting Meals on Wheels accomplish that?
The MOW matter generally would be viewed as a small-government matter. It’s a program where the money will be more efficiently allocated if it’s done closer to the need.
The San Antonio situation you cite is an excellent example. Lovely city, I’m there maybe six times a year. Your citation says they’re in for a 900K loss per annum, and that hits SA harder than most cities because they have a high concentration of military retirees.
So, it’s perfectly reasonable to look at the math and see what sort of burden a 900K loss actually puts on the governmental entities in San Antonio (which would be the City of San Antonio and Bexar County).
- Total San Antonio City 2017 budget: 2,500,000,000.
- Total Bexar County 16–17 budget (biennial) $1,850,000,000 (have to divide that by 2, obviously)
- Total budget, one year, both entities, $3,425,000,000.
So, a 900K cut represents .026% of the aggregate budget of the two entities. So, it’s basically a rounding error in their budgets.
Responsible fiscal governance is hard, because there’s no constituency for it.
When a simple look at the budgets of these entities shows that they spend far more than 900K doing all sorts of things less important than feeding seniors……it’s not at all out of order to point out that if there’s a real social need here, they need to rearrange their priorities. They can manage this program far more efficiently than the feds can.
Nothing Trump has done so far in office jibes with the priorities you have listed for him.
Well, two points come to mind. The first is that he’s only been in office for two months. It took Mr. Obama more than a year to get the ACA and Dodd-Frank onto his desk for signature. Outside of ARRA, which was queued up for him because of the financial crisis, nothing really happened during his first year. So, it’s a bit early in the semester to be issuing report cards. :-)
