I would think paying for oppo research, if that research is performed by a foreign government, would be illegal, or at least could easily be illegal depending on how its done.

The latter. Paying for research is not a crime, even if it’s the foreign government offering it. If the US citizen were to know that the intel was obtained illegally……then THAT could be illegal.

If he fired Comey to keep him from investigating a non-crime that was very embarrassing, that would still be obstruction.

No. What seems to be forgotten here is that Comey is not the investigator. The FBI is the investigator, and a Comey firing doesn’t impede an investigation in the slightest. Trump is within his statutory rights to dismiss anyone he chooses for any reason.

What this shows is that Trump did have something to worry about.

Nah. Trump wants the Russia matter to go away because it gets in the way of his agenda. He would want that regardless of if the matter was true or false.

Trump may have committed a crime by trying to keep the FBI from finding out about these not so good things his campaign did.

How would anyting Trump has done affected the FBI investigation?
