The largest manufacturing sector in the US is process manufacturing. Chemical is a part of that, but most of it is oil exploration, production, and refining.

Point here is that saying 17.2% of the world’s mfg is in the US is correct but misleading. People think of manufacturing as building widgets, not refining oil. And its the loss of the widget-building that’s the problem that is roiling the political landscape right now.
