The first step is to elect politicians who don’t view policy as a zero sum game.
At the present moment, these types of politicians are being pilloried by both sides as “people who don’t stand for anything”, which is utter nonsense. Romney. Bredesen. Hickenlooper. And how then do you define Tulsi Gabbard? Is a centrist somebody whose policy views all fall in the political middle? Or somebody that has extreme ideas which fall on both sides of the political aisle (Rand Paul comes to mind)? Or somebody who has strong views which fall well into the conservative or liberal camps, but still holds out the hope that we’ll return to a collegial form of politics someday (Howard Schultz.)?
