The demonstration of what most people do with democratized access to free speech has left me rather amazed, to be frank about it.
Before, when free speech was only exercised in front of other people with fists, we were much more polite. In the same vein, and contrary to what Hollywood spent years showing us, it was said that most towns in the Wild Wild West were rather civil places. You tend to be that way when your debate opponent is packing.
Now that we’re free to say what we want to masses from our secure positions behind a keyboard, we find, frightingly, that a rather large percentage of the polite people we are accustomed to interacting with are, in fact, crude, profane, and too many are only marginally sane. They do not engage in critical thinking oftimes, pose opinions as if they were fact (and defend them as such), and are intolerant of other views.
I seriously thought that people were more evolved than they’ve turned out to be. Very disappointing.
