the censorial environment we now know — the graduation season of keynote speaker disinvitations, PR protests of speakers, violent protests of speakers, and pseudonymous letters by professors living in fear of their students objecting to something they might say.

Well, as the mother of a daughter who will go to college next year, I tend to think of it this way:

I spent eighteen years raising this kid. I want the same kid back when you’re done with her as the one I gave you four years earlier. She’s smart and will broaden her horizons just by being at your institution; she doesn’t need your “help”, in the form of leftist propaganda and pop-neo-sociology, to broaden them. If you force her to take any classes in any of that shit to get a degree, you don’t get my kid.

A stunning one-third of millennials, the most well-educated generation, reported they believed that more people were killed under George W. Bush’s eight-year presidency than under Josef Stalin’s 30-year dictatorship. That is seriously some real tin-foil hat stuff.

Well, I guess not so well-educated.

The first step, though, is to make more people aware of the problem, and persuade people this is indeed a threat to our common welfare and the fabric of our democracy itself.

Sounds good. However, there’s more:

What’s becoming more and more obvious is that if you want a job that is immune from outsourcing, automation, and pays well, your safest spot is in the skilled trades. Plumbing. A/C repair. Diesel engine maintenance. And the like.

And when you consider the COST of an education at university these days, unless you are absolutely sure of your vocation that requires the higher degree…….then the better part of valor is to get your dental hygiene certificate at community college and enjoy life.

Take Medium. Medium seems to be the social platform of choice for “coders”. Coders are programmers. They’re the grunt labor of the New Economy, used by their masters to run 80 hour weeks to make the CEO and the VCs get rich. And they never know they’re being exploited, and that they’re the beginning of a cycle which makes them the authors of their own demise.

Every new technology cycle, there is a huge demand for programmers, which quickly wanes as programmer productivity is augmented by productivity tooling, reusable code, and automation. 90% of the happy millennial coding community on Medium will retire having done something other than coding for the last half of their careers, talking about that company “Google” that was such a big deal forty years before hand, before it got snapped up ATT or somebody.

Not everyone wants that sort of uncertainty in their lives, especially when it comes with a high price tag.

Data Driven Econophile. Muslim, USA born. Been “woke” 2x: 1st, when I realized the world isn’t fair; 2nd, when I realized the “woke” people are full of shit.
