Sure. This is true of a lot of events in political society --- a few ill advised statements or policies get into discourse, everything gets blown out of proportion by politicians who sense using the event for a political win.
A shame, actually. I could envision a nonpartisan group of educators using the George Floyd event to create a very effective integrated Black History Month curriculum containing intellectually honest antiracism materials. But.....I'd say that opportunity is now lost, with the opinions galvanized.
