Here’s my problem — removing Confederate statues and symbolism whitewashes the past, as if simply by pretending the Civil War and slavery didn’t exist, we can make them not exist.

Right. That’s why I would recommend not removing them, but moving them to a historical park designed for that purpose. Put those stories in context. We do it with the Holocaust, and that didn’t even happen on our land.

The Civil War was, as you point out, extremely complicated. And thus should not be removed from history.
