Regrettably, the thought that kept coming to my mind was "these people are lunatics."

Point to be made here: Free speech will always offend someone; that's why we need free speech laws, and why we view free speech as a moral, not just legal, imperative.

And also, the rationale used by authoritarian regimes which reject free speech rights usually has something to do with wanting to avoid offending someone.
