This is a well thought out article. However, from the comments, I think it’s clear that a lot of your readership isn’t interested in closing any “gaps” unless “Marietta” surrenders unconditionally to “Park Slope” in terms of ideology is concerned.

Which, of course, won’t happen. It didn’t happen in the 1960’s, either, when leftists were demonstrating on college campuses against a conservative establishment. Both “sides” were too invested into certain beliefs.

There is, of course, never reconciliation unless both “sides” of a debate are willing to admit their shortcomings.
