One of us is being willfully ignorant. The purpose of the debate is to try and clear up which one it is.
whatever counter indicator the conservative think tanks
This argument is a sign of intellectual weakness, accusing your debate opponent of just parroting the opinions of others. I never read *anything* written by any “think tank.” I don’t have to; being accomplished in statistics and data science, when confronted with a question regarding economic data, I google up the relevant data table, always using official government websites like the BLS, FRED, or (in the case of the effective tax rates) a table from a LEFT-leaning site, just to avoid the types of silly argumentation you are throwing at me.
Then, I fire up those datasets in THIS little toy:

clear and compelling every day evidence of corporate hegemony over the interests of the majority of citizens.
AH! See, we actually AGREE on a lot of this point, I would suspect. You see, traditional economic thought (which most misdefine as “conservativism”) is *NOT* a synonym to corporatism; and it’s corporatism which has become the prevailing ideology in both our political parties today.
That said, the SOLUTION to corporatism is NOT “socialism”, or “democratic socialism”, or “communism” or any of the left-leaning ideologies. The solution to corporatism, which is an aberration of traditional economic thought, is a return to traditional economic thought. Hayek and Keynes, both rabid free marketers who believed in balanced budgets and modest social spending, They did differ in some areas, particularly Keynes’ belief in spending into recessions, but in most areas, the two greatest economists that the world has known were largely in agreement.
Marx, OTOH, was no economist.
