“one of the scariest boogeyman has been a man, often but not always white, with a firearm in a public place.”
Well, it’s the armed man (or woman — I’m sure we’ll start having our own incidents soon, just like the sexual abuse of minors in schools is no longer a male-only problem) WITH ILL INTENT in the public place that scares me, not the guy who owns the RV and holds barbeques for his grandkids who happens to have a concealed carry permit.
In fact, I’m kind of glad that guy’s around.
I’m not entirely sure “we refuse to act” is the problem. The GOP takes a wait-see attitude — — not surprisingly, that’s their role in our government — so what they are looking for is a path forward on gun control which does not assume that the innocent are assumed to be guilty before they are, which ultimately does not infringe on an Enumerated Right, and for which there is solid evidence that it will solve the problem it intends to solve.
The Dems, who want to solve problems without concern for such issues (that’s THEIR role in our government) are ok with taking legal action (aka “doing SOMETHING”) without really caring about the Constitutional effect and/or that the action will have the intended effect.
It’s a conundrum, to be sure. But at the end of the day, it’s still the rot that exists within some of us that makes a person even consider such an act. That ‘rot’ can take on many forms — — it might be religion inspired insanity leading to terrorism, it might be paranoia, schizophrenia, or a person full of hate and anger. That’s the disease that needs to be cured.
