One notion that stuck with me from the late 60s and early 70’s was the rumor that there were young American “entrepreneurs” who would somehow navigate the various levels of customs controls and visas to get to Moscow or St. Petes (forget what you were calling it then, Stalingrad or Leningrad) with two suitcases loaded with Levi’s jeans purchased in the us for 10 bucks apiece, where they were salable for well over a hundred USD per garment.

No idea if that was urban myth or not. :-)
