In short, what is the relationship and the tension between education, indoctrination, social pressure, and free choice?

Let’s make this real and talk about my headscarf.

I started wearing my headscarf in my 40’s. Nobody made me do it. Nobody suggested I was going to hell if I didn’t do it. My study of my own religion infomed me that it was a way that I could please my Creator, which was something that I wanted to do.

So, it was education that led me to it, there was no indoctrination, there was no social pressure, and it was my free choice.

Now, is that true for most Muslim women? Depends on the nation they live in, obviously, But in the US……..its kind of on us. I live in a part of Houston with a lot os Muslims, and it is kind of humorous to see old 1st generation women all wrapped up in black shopping with their adult daughters, who have a crop top on and a navel piercing. :-)
