“It’s not a matter of firing someone over a single sentence.”
One hopes. The solution to bias is never more bias.
“It’s a matter of being able to perceive someone’s mindset through the specific sentence and context cues. “
That is………fairly close to the realm of fortune telling, in my view. People are complex animals who have relatively complex and diverse ways they process information. You pay a shrink a lot of money over months to be able to do this. Nobody, even a trained psychologist, would try to claim they could do this off the cuff.
“Mila indicated that she had further email discussions with the producer and she felt that he wasn’t intentionally being biased, based on how he was unaware of how his words could even be taken.”
We’re 80% in agreement, perhaps 90%. “Unintentional bias” actually has a better word to describe it: stupidity. Everyone is stupid from time to time, usually on a daily basis. We never want to be so strident that one gets bounced from a job for such a reason.
“But since he remains blind to her explanations it’s obvious that the bias is there…”
This is where we diverge. If he expressed that he was “blind”, at least he was being honest.
My original point was that most men will not and never will “get” this. My husband of decades admitted to me last Valentine’s day that even at age 60, he to this day has no idea why women want to get flowers. To him, they are expensive and they die and the money is better spent elsewhere. I spent about a half hour trying to explain to him that they represent that he was thinking about ME. His response? “Why would you not know that already?”
Bottom line: He’s spent 30 years buying me flowers because he knows I like them. He does not and never will have a clue as to WHY I like them. Same thing for what that producer said. If a man reads that and says they understand why that is gender bias, sorry, I think they’re lying. They're like my husband and flowers; they will take our word for it that that is gender bias, and they will stop doing it, but they won’t understand why.
“She cannot have any teammates who aren’t supportive of the objective.”
Bingo. THAT is where we can agree. At the end of the day, regardless of all this back and forth on understanding and commentary and whatever, if her SENSE was that he wasn’t totally on board with what she is trying to accomplish, then he needs to go.
That makes sense. It is also entirely gender neutral.
