It is nonsense to claim there are no Syrian regulars. I have relatives pinned down right now in al-Quamishly, where a rather tenuous peace is being kept by the Kurdish militia and (oops) a division of Syrian government troops.
The propaganda coming out of western sources trying to make western involvement look like something other than a disaster has reached (literally) mind numbing proportions.
Here’s what happens next: Western propaganda calls for a nationwide cease fire (now that their objectives cannot be reached by military means, simply because the Russians are better at doing what they do than anyone thought they would be) leading to a declaration that Syria is now a failed state, and the only path forward is UN-led “free and fair” elections. They will tell Mr. Assad he cannot run in those elections (which leads one to wonder what definition of “free and fair” is being used).
Why can’t Mr. Assad run? Because he’s likely to win. Which would destroy the western narrative as to why he “needs to go.”
