I just wanted to hear your opinion about why we protect rapists.

I’m not sure we do. I think we protect entitled people, especially the children of entitled people, and it goes back to who plays golf with who and who throws campaign money around. And we protect them not just from rape allegations, but all sorts of sociopathic activities. So, rape is just an example of this, albeit a particularly egregious one.

It’s clear that many institutions and groups have gone a long way to insulate their own structures and practices from scrutiny by protecting rapists and serial harassers.

Yep. An article was written on Medium just yesterday about how now that we have the spotlight on Hollywood and the media for their own issues, let’s also shine it on higher academia, where plum teaching assistant jobs, associate professorships, and research grants *also* have a “casting couch.”

The idea that Stanford also worked to keep the swim team from speaking out about how he treated women is even worse. I do worry about how people can be mistreated and have their lives ruined by over zealous administrators. But it’s becoming clear that women don’t really have an expectation of going to school or work in safety.

Reputation, reputation, reputation. That’s all these insitutionalists think about. Everyone else (except the ultrarich) are just rubes to them.
