If you want to disengage, that’s fine, but this is not a question of competing economic/political ideologies. If there is no other way forward for a future society than some sort of universal dole, I agree we’re at risk of that happening, and I’d rather see that than a dystopic society.

To me, this is a question of psychology. Welfare does not do anything for people’s character or pride; it’s a negative to one’s self-image. We’ve seen this time and time again, where the “welfare class” (depending on how that’s defined in various countries) gets stuck in alcoholism, suicide, and drug abuse. And you cannot give a dole a fancy name and think that recipients won’t notice; nor will the fact that the rich are getting same dole fool anyone who actually needs it.

You asked for alternatives. Here’s another. Instead of a universal dole, I’d rather see a massive expansion of government infrastructure programs. Conservative heresy, but we’re assuming we’ve entered a time where the available job opportunities are permanently smaller than and pay less than that which is required to fulfill human needs.

Japan sort of did this during their permarecession; the joke for those of us who travel there was that they were “paving the ocean” — — having long since reached the point where there was any necessary infrastructure to build, they had moved on to unnecessary infrastructure. So, think an FDR national works program, supported by the 20% (or whatever) of the people who still have jobs.

Employing people THAT WAY is far better for society than a permadole. They at least have a chance or retaining their self-respect, and to have the 20% of people on the top of the food chain respect them as well.
