I was thinking more of the selfless people in the various militaries of democratic nations around the world who have sacrificed themselves because there are priorities above their own lives.

Placing one’s own life and needs above the life and needs of others is a prioritization that quite a few people consider selfish, because THAT, in their estimation, is the cause of needless loss of life.
