At a real stretch, you could maybe say today’s Left also have real-life justifications for their discontent and desires for change, but whatever they might be, they are certainly not the same justifications as yesteryear’s Left. Communism enjoys little meaningful support, and few workers are having their families shot and killed for protesting their lot.

I think it may have been Voltaire who said “revolution comes from the stomach.” If that’s a truism, then fuggetabout revolution in the West; our low income class biggest health problems are obesity related diseases.

The US “far left” has always had, in my lifetime, a couple of characteristics which render their politics down to the level of a Snoopy cartoon, in my view. The first one is that there’s really nothing left to protest about. In the late 1800’s, you had unionization (80% of the population affected by that, one way or another); in the 20’s, you had sufferage (50% of the population affected by that), then civil rights (15% of the population), then gay rights (6% of the population), and now transgendered rights (1–2% if expansive definitions of fluidity are adopted.)

In short, they’re running out of things to be outraged about. So, now they’ve moved from RIGHTS to SOCIAL BEHAVIORS (#metoo) which is, if you think about it, a much better use of their time, in that there’s no legal policies that need to be adopted. It’s been illegal to harass women for fifty years; all they’re doing now is demanding that behaviors line up with the law, which is fine.

It creates a sort of illusion that opposition exists whilst, as was embodied by Hillary Clinton’s candidacy, its representatives are very much part of the status quo.

Sure. Instead of a real political opposition, what you have is a container in which we can put all of our glass-half-empty control freaks. :-)
