I think I told you this…..but I went here (red pin) when I was in Kazan a few years ago. So, this particular monastery dates back to the 1500’s I believe, but had been largely torn down and used as a prison and then a military staging location during WW2.

At any rate, it is now getting a load of money from both the government and UN (it is a UNESCO heritage site) to rebuild, and I think it quite wonderful that Russia invests in its religious historical sites.
