I recall a Greek Orthodox writer once who theorized that Hell wasn’t really the torture seen in Western Christianity, but simply eternal existence in the absence of God, sort of like you’re always looking into a Paradise that you could have been part of, but doomed to exist with the fact that you disinvited yourself.
