My simplistic take is that needs should be socialized whilst wants should be privatized. And no, I don’t want to go into the hugely debatable gray area this is, it’s just a simplified principal of pragmatism.
I get that it’s not a good subject for debate. It’s hard, though, to say that health care is a need, but as far as food and shelter are concerned, you’re on your own.
No economic system is free from the vestiges of other economic systems. It’s very hard, though to draw lines and say (in general) THIS is acceptable but THAT is not. You end up threading needles that can’t be threaded.
