I firmly believe the old axiom that's been around for as long as I've been politically aware, so, >50 years now:

America always elects the President it DESERVES.

As long as our political debate rejects all compromise and demonizes the other side, the quality of our leadership will continue to decline, as it has since Bush 1. It's been downhill ever since, either in terms of presidential qualifications, presidential ability, or moral fibre.
