In general, I think many just don’t get quite where you are coming from. Or they just hear criticism of their side and assume you are on some opposing side.
I am very fortunate to have gotten to know many immigrants from Eastern Europe. For some reason, our masjid in Houston has been a rallying point for Muslims from Romania, Bulgaria, Albania, the former Yugoslavia, and the like.
Svetlana Voreskova’s views on the American and European left are not at all out of sorts with those held by anyone with Eastern European roots living in the West. They easily catch the scent of communism coming from the American and European left, while born Americans seem to be dead to it.
And, once they catch that scent, they reflexively vomit all over it. In short, they’ve seen what happens when what we now call “progressive” ideas take power, know what social and economic devastation it wreaks, and are shocked that any thinking person would ever associate with “progressivism” as it is now defined in the West.
