Having traveled and lived all over Asia, I much prefer the practice of putting a 10% (in the US, it should be 15%) service charge on the restaurant bill. Nobody thinks twice about it, and it would represent a rather substantial raise for waitpeople who, despite the 15% tipping convention, probably average being tipped more like 8–10% of their total billings due to the prevalence of asshole customers.
