First off, don’t be so hard on the “thoughts and prayers” people. A lot of those praying people don’t care about the NRA.
But, more to the point, I personally would say that it’s about time that we took this problem not just seriously, but HONESTLY.
Here’s what honesty looks like:
- In order to alleviate some or all of this sort of senseless violence, you need to amend the Constitution. There’s simply no way to pass legislation which is sufficiently sweeping enough to move the needle on this violence as long as the 2nd Amendment stands.
- Due to the polarization of our politics, it’s impossible to amend the constitution on ANY issue, much less this one.
- So, forget about gun control legislation. Not going to happen.
But, wait! What do all (or the vast majority) of these shooters have in common?
Well, they are diagnosably mentally ill.
So, knowing that, what about actually screening for these problems at an early age? What about a Manhattan Project where we search for markers (could be genetic, could be biomarkers) that could help us diagnose these people and (a) make it impossible for THEM to acquire a weapon, and (b) make it obligatory for them to be treated?
The 2nd Amendment will not permit a legislative solution to this problem. So, instead of complaining about it, let’s search for a medical solution.
