You I take it are making the case that a politician… no wait.. the leader of the free world believes that certain countries are shitholes and by extension people from those countries are… well shit I guess, and that it is ok, or acceptable for him to refer to them and their countries as shitholes in conversation amongst a relatively large group of senators from all walks of life and political persuasions. Equally telling, you believe this is ok because other people have done it in the past.
Don’t put words in my mouth.
What I’m saying is that certain countries produce immigrants which are less desirable than others. That’s not news. Obviously, you’d rather have well educated immigrants who are well socialized into modern culture than a poorly educated immigrant who believes that (for example) it’s ok to beat your wife.
Your “by extension” is BS. Anyone who assumes that because a country is referred to as a shithole, that the speaker also thinks the PEOPLE of that country are shitty is committing a logical fallacy. Lots of decent people living in bad circumstances in this world; everyone knows that.
I would prefer that nobody call any other country a “shithole”. THAT SAID, an Oval Office meeting carries an expectation of confidentiality. Durbin should not be expecting any more invitations any time soon.
Yes it is true this has been opted for political gain (gasp.. shock.. dismay) but that is only possible because most politicians are acutely aware that calling your allies shitholes in any context is unwise except when you are amongst that tight knit clan of good ol boys when you are all shootin the breeze around a fire in “someones” front yard.
Well, the President isn’t a politician, and communications in an unfiltered and unvarnished way. Whether that is a feature or a bug depends on your political persuasion.
Why the change? well, I don’t think it was ever ok. Sure Nixon used to say similar things.. but I mean.. really… pattern your political career based on Nixon? So I don’t think there is a change.
Morals don’t change, so whether calling another nation a “shithole” is right or wrong doesn’t change. What’s changed is behavior of the politicians (leaking this) and the behavior of the media in response.
If anything changed.. is that in decades past when a president said something vile an stupid, fellow politicians kept their mouth shut out of misguided respect… a professional courtesy if you will. Well Trump ran on the concept of changing all the rules and with a win at any cost approach.
Precisely. Unfortunately, this will all backfire on the DACA kids.
