Depends. As you point out, "Defund" doesn't really mean "defund". It was an egregiously stupid slogan from a political standpoint.
But then you turn around and blame politicians and the media for being politicians and the media. That's not going to change; the former is always going to be looking for a wedge issue to use as a cudgel, and the media is always going to be looking for a way to get more clicks. That's to be taken for granted.
The point remains that the extremes own the dialogue right now, the triblalists defend it, and more and more people are sitting in the center saying "Who the hell ARE these people?"
Here's an interesting thought exercise. What current politician's viewpoints best capture that bell-shaped curve of voters in the center-left thru to the center-right?
Or, perhaps another way of putting it woudl be, "What person, if they ran for president, could potentially win some red states AND some blue states?"
