I'm aware of the quote. But there's very little in Christian history that shows that Christians are wiling to allow themselves to be killed in obedience to that, so one must conclude that Christians don't believe that they are enjoined from protecting themselves.
As for the jury being convinced, my opinion is that the defense had the easiest job in the world. Hard to imagine anyone watching that video and *not* being convinced it was self-defense. It was kind of a slam-dunk.
