But, you know, oh well, sucks to be you if you chose poorly
“Chose Poorly” means that you believe either that (a) the US medical system includes poorly trained quacks who are unqualified to practice medicine competently, AND/OR (b) there are patients within the system that somehow do NOT have access to a GP who can advise them if need be, AND/OR Americans are stupider than people in other nations, where many universal systems provide the ability for people to cost-shop for their care, precisely what you are saying that Americans should not have the ability to do.
In fact, none of these are true, nor would be true. Diagnosis or procedures are not prescribed by long paragraphs of unintelligible lingo, but by alphanumeric codes:
What is Medical Coding? - AAPC
Medical coding is the first step in the medical billing and coding process. It involves using ICD 10, ICD 9, CPT and…
Here’s a good example. The following diagnosis and treatment resolves down to the medical code 93455,92980,LC:
Coronary Cath Plcmnt/Stenting
Need some assistance in coding this report. Thank you. (93455,92980,LC)??? PROCEDURE: 1. Coronary angiography. 2…
So, yes, that entire long unintelligible mess of medical jargon translates into two five digit-numbers and 2 alpha characters.
So, as a child of five can now see, the patient does not need to understand any of that crap; what the patient needs to know is that his doctor is recommending 93455,92980,LC. This is how in the Netherlands, for one example, can run reverse internet auctions for medical care. The patient’s doctor can, if the patient wishes, write him a “prescription” for the procedure, which can then be put up into the reverse auction. So, basically, the patient is asking the question “I need [codes] done. What’s it cost at your facility?”. The facilities’ then bid on the procedure, and the patient can then pick the cheapest, or cheapest with the best reputation, or however they wish.
So, this entire “if you put cost responsibility onto the patient, they’d need a medical degree” is one big FUCKING RED HERRING floated by people who have this fetish for a single payer system.
Hope that helps, but it seems to me that you’re totally mired into inside-the-box thinking and can’t conceive of anything creative that might actually SOLVE the coming health care crisis (that’s right, it’s not here yet, it’s still coming) in the US.
