Although there are parts of your analysis of the conservative mind that I disagree with (in that you’re extrapolating from the clinical work and drawing questionable conclusions from it) you’;re quite right about the liberal hubris when these situations arise.
Conservatives *also* want to tinker with existing laws, rules, regulations, mores…..as little as possible, because of the well documented cases of overreach and unintended consequences that could possibly erupt. Evolutionary, organic changes to society and law are your friend; a bunch of politicians swooping down saying “We’re from Washington, we;re here to help” is not. Because of the high probability that they’ll get it wrong.
The problem on the table is how to solve a problem of MASS KILLINGS IN SCHOOLS. Gun regulations are *obviously* a variable in that equation, but so are a lot of things:
- Getting law enforcement to take warnings more seriously
- The human security situation at schools (it is hard to argue, seeing that banks and corporate headquarters all have armed guards, and schools often do not, that we value children more than we value money and our corporations).
- The physical security situation at schools (schools are a physical security expert’s nightmare, with multiple entryways and tons of windows; banks are built the way they are built for a reason, after all.)
- Our ability to intervene in cases where mental health might be an issue (this is often an unintended consequence of HIPAA and other confidentiality regulations, that a mentally ill individual goes unnoticed until something nasty happens.)
The other day, I listed all these to a person who I can only describe as a “gun grabber” — — in his mind, the ONLY solution to the issue was an Australian-style grab, and if anyone (me) suggested otherwise, I was actually a party to the killing of children.
Although (ahem) i think it’s NICE that the American Left finds room for such unhinged individuals in their big tent (/sarc), that sort of attitude results in nothing happening. The Left, if they make the perfect the enemy of the practical, will end up with nothing. Again. And those of us on the right who would like to address the problem in a balanced, holistic fashion will again get blamed when it happens again, and again, and again………
I am not optimistic.
